The Wendy’s Company became aware of a POS Data breach in late January 2016, but little did they know that the number of affected franchises was to increase significantly.
Wendy’s recently publicly announced that over 1,000 United States franchised locations were affected by two variants of POS Malware. This announcement is stark considering the initial count of ‘300 locations’ is significantly higher than once thought.
While the fast food chain insists that no corporate locations have been affected, it’s hard to trust them when the initial count of affected restaurants was off by over 700 locations.
The attack on Wendy’s POS systems began in late fall of 2015, and both types of malware were introduced to the POS systems through a compromised third-party vendor’s credentials.
This entire breach has proven to be a disaster and poorly thought out. According to STEALTHbits, “What Wendy’s have shown over the past six months is that the scope of the malware infections is still unknown.”
Going forward, retailers and restaurant chains alike should learn from this incident and place greater emphasis on early breach detection.
