Honda was forced to shut down one of its manufacturing plants on Monday after finding WannaCry ransomware on its network.
The firm briefly shut down its Sayama plant after finding a day earlier that the ransomware was spotted on machines in North America, Europe, China, and Japan. Its Sayama plant is said to produce over 1,000 vehicles a day.
This news comes weeks after WannaCry was originally spotted and security experts advised organizations worldwide to patch systems to protect against the looming threat. Honda claims they worked to patch systems when the threat emerged in Mid-May, but evidence proves different.
Despite the brief setback, Honda resumed operations at its Sayama plant on Tuesday and no other plants have been impacted.
At times like this, it’s worth noting the importance of covering the basics of security and adopting existing, known best practice. NNT recommends adopting the CIS critical controls as a basis for sound cyber security. NNT also has several Ransomware Mitigation Kits, comprising the necessary automated vulnerability checks and also the Group Policy/Puppet templates to automatically fix any weaknesses identified.
