The University of Rhode Island has recently suffered a data breach stemming from the University’s’ URI email accounts.
The University announced on Friday, August 20, that an individual not affiliated with the University was inappropriately collecting & could possibly be using information belonging to some 3,000 current and former URI students. Credentials among those compromised include names, dates of birth, URI email addresses and passwords, and students personal emails & Facebook login credentials.
A URI spokesperson recently stated, “Some reports implied that someone hacked into our email system and stole the data. There’s currently no evidence to suggest that. All we know is that the perpetrator accessed individual email accounts, not necessarily the system themselves.”
The University has recently posted an announcement on their website suggesting all current and former URI students change their URI email and e-Campus password for protection.
The University of Rhode Island is not alone in this issue, as other Universities such as Harvard, University of Maryland, Arkansas State University, and countless others have fallen victim to this problem. With NNT’s Change Tracker Gen 7, we can provide you with market leading File Integrity Monitoring for any security & compliance initiative to protect your organization against known and emerging cyber security threats.
