Organizations across the globe experienced major breaches in 2017 as a result of known vulnerabilities, and Trend Micro predicts this trend is only going to rise in 2018 as corporate attack surfaces expand and expose more security holes.

The Trend Micro Security Predictions for 2018 predicts that in 2018, digital extortion will be at the core of most hackers’ business models as they aim to gain even hefty payouts than in 2017.

Trend Micro claims that increased connectivity and interaction over insecure networks possess a huge security threat to corporations. They predict that vulnerabilities in weak IoT devices will expand the attack surface as devices become woven into the fabric of smart environments around the world. As more and more devices are manufactured without security regulations or industry standards taken into account, cybercriminals will continue to leverage known vulnerabilities within these devices to penetrate corporate networks.

Unsurprisingly, ransomware attacks are predicted to be a mainstay due to its proven success. However, criminals are expected to move towards more targeted attacks, going after a single organization to disrupt operations and demand a higher payout.

Additional, whaling and other Business Email Compromise attacks will continue to gain popularity with attackers as the attacks prove to be lucrative for criminals year after year.

Lastly, companies are expected to face hurdles as they try to keep up with the directives of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in time for its May 2018 enforcement.
