Brian Krebs has now provided some detailed insight to the recent Sony Pictures Entertainment breach, revealing that the hack was far more complex and potentially damaging than was first understood.
Background intelligence provided suggests this was a malware-based attack with an executable igfxtpers.exe being referenced (which is why it is vital to use File Integrity Monitoring to detect any new system files being added to systems since zero-day malware will sidestep anti-virus defenses). The behavior of this malware is to completely wipe the hard drives of infected computers.
Krebs also reports that Sony employee data - including SSN and salary details - has been exposed and is being traded on the cyber black market.
