AV-TEST spotted 127.5 million malware samples in 2016, a 14% decrease from that of 2015 which identified 144 million malware samples.
While the number of samples is on the decline, security researchers warn these threats are becoming increasingly more sophisticated, as seen by the NotPetya and WannaCry ransomware attacks, the persistent attacks on IoT devices, and banking Trojans such as Dridex seen recently.
While most users are genuinely concerned about the risk of ransomware, this type of malware makes up less than one percent of the total share of Windows malware. AV-TEST noted that ransomware development peaked in the first quarter of 2017 with over 110,000 samples detected in April alone.
The company has also noted that the quantity of Windows malware has decreased, but the number of Mac OS samples have increased by 370% to 3,033 samples, the vast majority of which being Trojans.
In today’s threat landscape, it seems nearly impossible to protect against sophisticated cyber threats. To best protect enterprise networks, it’s vitally important organizations of all sizes are implementing threat intelligence solutions to protect against malicious malware and persistent threats.
With NNT Change Tracker Gen7, organizations come equipped with industry leading solutions like File Integrity Monitoring, Change & Configuration Management, Continuous Compliance, System Hardening & Vulnerability Management, and Breach Detection, helping them fight against these malicious cyber criminals.
