A recent study conducted by Spiceworks has found that IT professionals feel responsible for the security of their organization's data.

They also found that 80% of organizations surveyed experienced an IT security incident in 2015, but fortunately, 71% of IT professionals expect their organization to be more secure in 2016. This boost of confidence comes from the fact that companies are now investing more in advanced security solutions and are regularly educating and training their employees’ on security risks.

Those surveyed stated the most common security incident their organization experienced in 2015 was malware attacks at 51%, followed by phishing and spyware instances at 38% and 34% respectively. When asked what their biggest concern for 2016, more than half of IT professionals are most worried about ransomware.

This survey also found that internal actors represent a huge IT security issue, with 80% of those surveyed stating end users represent the biggest challenge in the IT security world due to limited understanding of security issues as well as resistance to security solutions and policies.

Fortunately, there is some good news. In order for companies to better protect end users from breaches, 73% of IT professionals are implementing end-user security policies, and 72% are frequently educating their employees through lessons on issues like ‘how to avoid malware’ and how to spot a phishing email.

There is no silver bullet for protecting against a data breach, but staying up to date with the latest security solutions and tips on what to look out for is a great start.
