Germany to Launch Cyber Command Center

Germany’s armed forces announced Saturday plans to launch a cyber command to protect against attacks on critical infrastructure.

German military planners have expressed fear that the wars of our future will start with attacks on critical infrastructure and networks, online espionage, and sabotage.

The Bundeswehr’s Cyber and Information Space (CIR) Command will start with 260 IT specialists and expects to grow 13,500 military and civilian personnel by July 2017. The center will be based out of the former German capital of Bonn. 

Lieutenant General Ludwig Leinhos claims the forces’ main tasks will be operating and protecting the military’s IT Infrastructure and computer-assisted weapons systems, including the surveillance of online threats.

Since last year’s cyber-attack against Germany’s parliament, the German government has pushed for increased cyber defenses. What’s even more alarming is that just this year alone, in the first nine weeks of 2017, 280,000 targeted attacks were been made against the IT systems of the Bundeswehr.
